Itinerary of the Galicia, Rias Baixas & North of Portugal coach tour:
Day 1. (Tuesday) MADRID – LEON – OVIEDO
Departure from Madrid northward to Leon, a historic enclave on the Pilgrim’s Road to Santiago de Compostela. Free time to visit some of the most emblematic buildings such as the Gothic cathedral, with the most beautiful stained glass windows in Europe, the Collegiate Church of San Isidoro and the facade of the San Marcos Hostel in Plateresque style. We’ll then continue to Oviedo, a city of an unquestionable medieval flavour. Free time to explore Oviedo, most of its streets are pedestrian, where you will be able to see World Heritage Sites like the Cathedral of Oviedo, a splendid example of gothic Asturian architecture or the beautiful church of Santa Maria de Naranco, a jewel of the pre-romanic Asturian architecture. Dinner and accommodation.
Day 2. (Wednesday) OVIEDO – LA CORUÑA – SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA
Breakfast at the hotel. Departure to Galicia with its landscapes of lush valleys and stunning beaches, spectacular cliffs, charming fishing villages and incredible cities. Arrival to the stately city of A Coruña, with its beautiful houses of glazed galleries, cobbled streets that embrace the old city, the castle of San Anton or the Tower of Hercules, the oldest lighthouse in the world in operation and World Heritage Site by the UNESCO. We’ll enjoy a panoramic tour of the city. In the afternoon, we will continue our journey to Santiago de Compostela, whose old town is a World Heritage Site, one of the most important monumental centres of Spain, one of the sacred cities of Christendom and end of the Way of Saint James pilgrimage route. Arrival at the hotel, dinner and accommodation.
Day 3. (Thursday) SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA
Breakfast at the hotel. We will have a full day at our disposal to visit Santiago de Compostela. Accompanied by an expert local guide, we will take a guided tour of Santiago de Compostela, discovering, amongst other things, the Plaza del Obradoiro, the point where all the routes of the Camino de Santiago converge. There we will find the symbol of the city, the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, dedicated to the Apostle Saint James the Greater, one of the twelve disciples of Jesus Christ and brother of John the Evangelist. Free time in the afternoon for you to continue visiting this historic city, discover its lively and vibrant university atmosphere, sample the delicious cuisine that Galician tradition has preserved and its regional products, especially its seafood, fish, and meats, or participate in an optional activity with your guide. Overnight stay and dinner at the hotel.
Day 4. (Friday) SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA – RIAS BAJAS – LA TOJA – VIGO
After breakfast, we travel to the most picturesque area of the Galician Estuaries, the Rias Baixas Estuaries. Through splendid landscapes of the Ría de Arosa, we will arrive at La Toja Island, universally known for its spa. In O Grove, you can optionally take a catamaran tour to learn how oysters and mussels are grown. During this optional excursion we include a tasting of mussel and Ribeiro wine. Our route continues to Vigo, located in the middle of the estuary to which it gives its name, the southernmost estuary of the Rías Baixas and undoubtedly the most beautiful one, with beaches of great attraction. As an optional activity you can take an excursion to Mount Santa Tecla, a must-see place for its interesting archaeological, religious and landscape values. The Santa Tecla archaeological site is considered one of the most important examples of the Roman culture of the Iberian Northwest region. Accommodation at the hotel.
Day 5. (Saturday) VIGO – LEON
Breakfast at the hotel. Departure for Leon, a historic enclave on the Camino de Santiago (Way of St. James) to Compostela, crossing landscapes that combine mountains, green valleys, and traditional villages of inland northwest Spain. Once in León, you will have free time to discover this city, fundamental to Spanish history and one of the major landmarks of the Camino. We recommend visiting León Cathedral, one of the most spectacular Gothic cathedrals in Spain, famous for housing some of the most beautiful medieval stained-glass windows in Europe; exploring the Collegiate Church of San Isidoro, a Romanesque jewel that preserves the famous Pantheon of the Kings, known as the Sistine Chapel of Romanesque art; and the monumental Plateresque façade of the Hostal de San Marcos, a former convent now one of the city’s most emblematic buildings. We also recommend exploring the Barrio Húmedo (the old town), perfect for soaking up the local atmosphere, sampling traditional tapas, and discovering lively little squares, or strolling along Calle Ancha Street, the pedestrianized commercial heart of León, ideal for shopping and experiencing the city’s vibrant energy. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 6. (Sunday) LEON – SALAMANCA – MADRID
Breakfast. Departure for Salamanca, the quintessential university city. Free time to explore at your own pace, this World Heritage Site of great artistic wealth. A stroll around the pedestrian streets in its historic centre will take you to Plaza Mayor, one of the most beautiful squares in Spain, you may visit Salamanca’s two cathedrals (the old cathedral dating from the 12th-13th centuries of Romanesque style, and the new one from the 16th century), the House of Shells, the Baroque style Clerecia church and the University with its beautiful Plateresque façade.
