Itinerary: Coach tour to Northern Spain and Portugal 13 days from Barcelona
Day 1. (Tuesday) BARCELONA – ZARAGOZA (train) – SAN SEBASTIAN
Presentation at the Barcelona “Sants” station, departure by high-speed train to Zaragoza. Pleasant and short journey with the comfort and speed of this AVE train. Arrival in Saragossa, capital of the province of Aragon, located on the banks of the Ebro River, which is the largest in the Iberian Peninsula. Zaragoza, known as Caesar Augusta during the Roman period, played a very important role in Spanish history. They will enjoy free time to visit the Basilica of Nuestra Señora del Pilar, Patron Saint of Hispanic Heritage. Afterwards, we continue our trip to the Basque Country, a green paradise, land of great contrasts, to reach San Sebastián, one of the most attractive tourist destinations on the Cantabrian coast and known worldwide for its International Film Festival. Day 2. (Wednesday) SAN SEBASTIAN
Breakfast at the hotel. We will have a whole day in the capital of Gipuzkoa, Donostia, as this city is known in Basque. We start the day with a panoramic tour of San Sebastian, this French and bourgeois city, whose landscape is dominated by the Bay of San Sebastián and La Concha Beach, framed by Mount Igueldo and the island of Santa Clara. Then you will enjoy a free afternoon to continue exploring this city, stroll along Playa de la Concha, the most beautiful city beach in Europe, adorned by luxurious mansions, or discover the network of cobbled streets of the Old Town of San Sebastian, where the luxury shops coexist with bars and taverns, where you can taste the typical pinchos, bite-sized appetizers, considered the quintessence of Basque cuisine. In the afternoon, your guide will offer you the possibility of taking an excursion to Hondarribia, one of the most beautiful villages in the Basque Country and Saint-Jean-de-Luz, the hidden jewel of the French Basque Country. Day 3. (Thursday) SAN SEBASTIÁN – BILBAO – CASTRO URDIALES – SANTANDER
Breakfast at the hotel. We begin our day with a climb to Monte Igueldo, an unbeatable vantage point from where you can enjoy a magnificent view of the city. Continuation to Bilbao, capital of the province of Vizcaya. Arrival and panoramic tour of Bilbao. Then, we will enjoy some free time to admire the avant-garde building of the Guggenheim Museum. Design and architecture pervade this entire city. Our route along the Cantabrian Coast continues to Castro Urdiales, a charming little fishing village of medieval origin, with its characteristic houses with wooden balconies and narrow streets that invite you to stroll. Brief stop to admire this beautiful enclave and continue to Santander, capital of Cantabria, one of the most elegant and beautiful cities on the North Coast of Spain, which stretches along a wide bay with views of the Cantabrian Sea. Arrival and free time to visit its historic centre, which brings together a group of noble buildings, the Cathedral, one of the oldest buildings in the capital and which houses the tomb of Marcelino Menéndez Pelayo, the Plaza Porticada or stroll along the famous El Sardinero beach, one of the most beautiful promenades in Spain, with sumptuous buildings, such as the Gran Casino, which evokes the architecture of the Belle Époque. Day 4. (Friday) SANTANDER – SANTILLANA – COVADONGA – OVIEDO
Breakfast at the hotel. Departure to Santillana del Mar, one of the most important historical artistic cities in Spain. It contains architectural treasures such as the Collegiate Church of Santa Juliana, a jewel of Romanesque architecture in Cantabria. Further on, driving on a winding road that little by little will reveal a beautiful landscape made up of calm waters, unimaginable green carpets and mountain peaks that seem almost within our reach, we will arrive at Covadonga, where you will have free time to visit the Sanctuary of Covadonga, place of worship and pilgrimage for all Asturians, where you will see the Patron Saint of Asturias, Our Lady of Covadonga. In the afternoon, departure to Oviedo, a city with an unquestionable medieval flavour. Free time to explore Oviedo, with its pedestrian streets, where you can see places declared World Heritage such as the Oviedo Cathedral, a splendid example of Asturian Gothic architecture or the beautiful church of Santa María de Naranco, a jewel of Asturian pre-Romanesque architecture. Day 5. (Saturday) OVIEDO – MONDOÑEDO – LUGO – SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA
Breakfast. Departure to Galicia with its landscapes of lush valleys and impressive beaches, spectacular cliffs, charming fishing villages and incredible cities. Our first stop will be in Mondoñedo, which belongs to the exclusive group of the “Most Beautiful Towns in Spain“, where we will have time to visit the majestic Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, declared a national monument in 1902. Be sure to try the famous Tarta de Mondoñedo, the star product of local gastronomy and which was present at the most illustrious tables such as that of the kings of Spain or that of the Vatican. After that, we continue our route to Lugo, a city located on the banks of the Miño River, which preserves important traces of its Roman past, among them its thousand-year-old wall, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Free time to walk through its historic centre with pedestrian streets, wide squares and landscaped spaces, where buildings such as the Cathedral, the Archbishop’s Palace and the City Hall stand out. We continue the route to the stately city of Santiago de Compostela, whose old town is a World Heritage Site, one of the most important monumental centres in Spain, one of the sacred cities of Christianity and the end of the pilgrimage route of the Camino de Santiago. Day 6. (Sunday) SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA
Breakfast at the hotel. Accompanied by an expert guide, we take a guided tour of Santiago de Compostela starting at Plaza del Obradoiro, the nerve centre of the city and final destination for pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago, an ancient pilgrimage route, since the Cathedral of Santiago is located here, which houses the sepulchre of the Apostle Santiago el Mayor. After the visit of the Cathedral of Santiago, we begin with a walk through the old city of Santiago de Compostela, which is concentrated around the cathedral and which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The afternoon will be at your disposal, so that you can continue visiting this historic city, discover its university atmosphere of joy and vitality, taste the delicious cuisine that the Galician tradition has preserved and its regional products, especially its shellfish, fish and meat. We recommend touring the streets of the historic centre discovering noble residences, Renaissance, Baroque and neoclassical stately homes, visiting the Hostal de los Reyes Católicos, today transformed into a national hostel, the Colegio de San Xerome, headquarters of the university’s rectory, and the Palace of Raxoi, headquarters of the Santiago City Council. Day 7. (Monday) SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA – RIAS BAJAS – LA TOJA – PORTO
After breakfast, we travel to the most picturesque area of Galicia, its Rías Bajas. Through splendid landscapes of the Ría de Arosa, we will arrive at the Isla de La Toja, universally known for its spa. Then, crossing the border of Portugal, we finish our daily route in Porto, a city declared a World Heritage Site. Arrival at the hotel and accommodation.
Day 8. (Tuesday) PORTO
Breakfast at the hotel. We have a whole day to enjoy this authentic city, capital of the North of Portugal. We begin with a panoramic tour of Porto to discover the Sé Cathedral, the most important religious monument in Porto, a mixture of styles and influences, also the Stock Exchange Palace, one of the most beautiful buildings in Porto, Santa Clara Church and ending in a local winery where we will taste its world-famous “Porto wine”. Rest of the day at your disposal to discover the atmosphere charged with history and nostalgia of this port city located in the Ribera del Duero, at its mouth in the Atlantic Ocean, with its elegant neighbourhoods and stately villas in counterpoint with the narrow streets and old alleys. You can walk along Avenida dos Aliados, the Ribeira de Porto on the banks of the Douro and admire the Dom Luis I Bridge, the most famous bridge in Porto, climb the Clérigos Tower, the best viewpoint of Porto, from where you will have fabulous panoramic views from the historic centre of the city. Day 9. (Wednesday) PORTO
Breakfast at the hotel. Free day at your disposal. You will be able to rest from the trip and recharge your batteries or go on an excursion through the North of Portugal and visit charming cities such as the historic city of Braga, where monuments such as the Episcopal Palace, the Sé de Braga or the Bom Jesus Sanctuary stand out. Nearby is Guimarães, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you can visit its imposing castle or the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza. And further south, you will find Aveiro, known as the Venice of Portugal, a beautiful coastal city crossed by canals in which a most traditional atmosphere is preserved. Day 10. (Thursday) PORTO – COIMBRA – FATIMA
Breakfast at the hotel. We leave Porto to the south to reach Coimbra, a riverside city rising from the Mondego River, the former capital of Portugal during the Middle Ages. Arrival and free time at your disposal to explore its well-preserved medieval old town with its dark cobbled streets, visit the monuments of Coimbra: the monumental 12th-century Romanesque cathedral Sé Velha, the historic University of Coimbra, the oldest and most prestigious university in Portugal, the gothic Igreja de Santa Cruz, the most historically important church in Coimbra or enjoy coffee and pastries at Café Santa Cruz. We continue our route south to Fátima. We will discover this important sacred centre of the Christian faith, known worldwide for its Sanctuary of Fatima, a place of Christian pilgrimage since the beginning of the 20th century. Free time at your disposal to visit the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima: the impressive Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, the Chapel of the Apparitions, the heart of the sanctuary and the place where, according to the Catholic Church, three visionary children Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta Marto received various apparitions and heavenly messages from the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God. You will be able to visit the tombs of the three little shepherds, the precious statue of Our Lady of Fatima, the great oak, and also the monument dedicated to the three little shepherds of Fatima. Day 11. (Friday) FATIMA – BATALHA – NAZARE – ALCOBAÇA – LISBON
After breakfast, we will leave for the Batalha Monastery, a work of art in the Gothic and Manueline styles, built to commemorate the Battle of Aljubarrota, when the Portuguese troops managed to curb the Castilian ambitions for the Portuguese throne. Our route continues to Nazaré, the most picturesque and colourful fishing village in Portugal, located on the Silver Coast (Costa da Prata). If we have enough time, we will go up to O Sitio (the old town) to enjoy a panoramic view of the city and its beaches. We will continue our trip to Alcobaça, where we will visit its 12th century Monastery of Alcobaça, one of the most impressive Gothic monuments in Portugal with the tombs of King Pedro I of Portugal and his lover, Inés de Castro. At the end of the day, we will continue to Lisbon, the capital and the largest city of Portugal. Arrival and lodging in the hotel. At night, optionally, you can enjoy a fado show (typical Portuguese folk music).
Day 12. (Saturday) LISBON
Breakfast at the hotel. We enjoy a full day to explore every corner of Lisbon. We will start the day with a guided tour of Lisbon. Through the traditional neighbourhoods of Lisbon, we will reach the Belém district, on the north bank of the Tagus River estuary, the birthplace of many great Portuguese navigators who set sail on the oceans in the 15th century to explore and trade with India and the Orient. We will see the Monument of Discoveries (Padrão dos Descobrimentos), a monument that celebrates the Portuguese Age of Discovery, we will see the Tower of Belém, a medieval defensive fortification and an outstanding example of the Portuguese Manueline style. Finally, we will see the beautiful Gothic-style Jerónimos Monastery, the resting place of Vasco da Gama, and declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO along with the nearby Belém Tower. You will enjoy free time to explore Lisbon at your leisure, discover the nostalgic corners of the Alfama Quarter, the old city clustered together with its castle with its old buildings and narrow, twisting “ruas” full of colour, which are home to traditional “taverns” where fado music sounds like a lost past. Optionally, you can take a bus tour to visit Sintra, UNESCO World Heritage, along with Cabo da Roca and admire Cascais and Estoril. Accommodation at the hotel.
Day 13. (Sunday) LISBON – CACERES – MADRID
Our last breakfast in Portugal. Departure to Spain through beautiful green plains that stretch as far as the eye can see, dotted with cork oaks and olive trees that resist time. Back in Spain, we enjoy the beautiful landscapes of the Extremadura Region, extensive areas of holm oaks and cork oaks known as “dehesas” and where Iberian pigs roam freely in search of acorns. Arrival in Cáceres, a magical medieval city, capital of the province, in western Spain. Free time to stroll through the old town with its walls and watchtowers and its well-known medieval quarter, considered a World Heritage Site. We recommend that you follow the narrow paths that will transport you to another century and captivate you with the ancient charm of it. You will discover the main square of Cáceres: the Plaza Mayor and the Bujaco Tower, known locally as the Clock Tower, the Arco de la Estrella, which is one of the five access gates of Cáceres, the beautiful Palacio de los Golfines… By the Afternoon, continue to Madrid. Arrival and end of services.
