Itinerary: Best of Andalusia 5 days from Madrid (departures Monday)
Day 1. (Monday) MADRID – CÓRDOBA – SEVILLE
We depart Madrid, heading south into the legendary land of Don Quixote, the Man of La Mancha. As we traverse these vast, golden plains, we reach the dramatic Despeñaperros Pass. This majestic natural gateway through the Sierra Morena mountains leads us into Andalusia, a region steeped in history and boasting an extraordinary heritage from its splendid Moorish and Christian past. Arrival in Córdoba, the former capital of the Caliphate and a city that once stood as the intellectual heart of Europe. We join an expert local guide for a guided tour of Córdoba’s most iconic sights. Wander through the labyrinthine streets of the Jewish Quarter (La Judería), where whitewashed walls and floral-adorned balconies lead us to the historic Synagogue. The highlight of our tour is the visit of the Great Mosque-Cathedral, a breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage Site and a crowning achievement of Islamic architecture. Its iconic forest of red-and-white arches offers a tranquil atmosphere that truly soothes the spirit. Free time for lunch or to take a leisurely stroll along the Roman Bridge or discover the lush, manicured gardens of the Royal Alcázar of the Christian Monarchs, famed for its magnificent terraced gardens and sparkling fountains. In the afternoon, we depart for Seville, the sun-drenched capital of Andalusia. Overnight accommodation at our hotel.
Day 2. (Tuesday) SEVILLE
After breakfast, we embark on a panoramic tour of Seville, a city that radiates elegance and charm. We visit the magnificent Seville Cathedral, the largest Gothic cathedral in the world—and its iconic Giralda Tower, the former Almohad minaret that stands as a symbol of the city’s Moorish legacy. Our journey continues through the enchanting Santa Cruz neighbourhood. This historic Jewish quarter, with its hidden plazas and flower-filled balconies, served as the romantic backdrop for the legend of Don Juan and Bizet’s Carmen. The afternoon is yours to savour the unique flavours and vibrant atmosphere of the capital of Andalusia. Whether you choose to visit the Plaza de España, Maria Luisa Park or Torre del Oro, take a scenic boat cruise on the Guadalquivir River to enjoy a different perspective of the city’s skyline, followed by a stroll along its historic banks, celebrated by poets as the Great King of Andalusia, or simply enjoy tapas in a sun-drenched square, the city’s energy is sure to captivate you. To complete your Andalusian experience, you may optionally join us for a passionate Flamenco show, where the soul of Spain comes to life in an unforgettable performance. Overnight stay.
Day 3. (Wednesday) SEVILLE – GRANADA
After breakfast, we head east, following the legendary Caliphate Route, the ancient path that once linked the great Moorish kingdoms of Seville, Córdoba, and Granada. The landscape transforms into a vast, shimmering ocean of olive trees, a testament to centuries of tradition in the heart of Spain’s olive-growing region. This historic trail, once walked by caliphs and merchants, leads us through white-washed villages and ancient frontiers until we reach the majestic city of Granada, the legendary last stronghold of the Moorish Kingdom until 1492. We’ll do a guided tour of the world-famous Alhambra Palace and Generalife Gardens. We have included your entry and an official local guide to lead you through this stunning palace complex. You will marvel at the intricate stucco work of the Nasrid Palaces, the imposing Palace of Charles V, and the serene beauty of the Generalife Gardens, with their sparkling fountains and fragrant jasmine. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is widely considered the most beautiful example of Islamic architecture in the Western world. Following our visit, enjoy free time to discover the soul of Granada. Optionally, you can join us for an unforgettable night in the Sacromonte caves for an authentic Zambra Gitana. This passionate Gypsy Flamenco show, performed in a traditional cave-dwelling, is a deep immersion into the spirit of Granada. Accommodation at the hotel.
Day 4. (Thursday) GRANADA
Breakfast. Today you will enjoy a free day in the Nasrid capital. In the morning, we recommend taking a walk through the monumental area of Granada, strolling through the origins of this city that still preserves all the magic of its Arab past. There are some must-see places: the Royal Chapel of Granada, the place chosen by the Catholic Monarchs for their last rest, the Cathedral, with its impressive Spanish baroque style façade and also the Alcaiceria, the old silk market in the Nasrid era, a labyrinth of narrow alleys brimming with traditional crafts and exotic aromas. For lunch, head to the vibrant Calle Navas, a local favourite for experiencing Granada’s famous tapas culture. In the afternoon, wander through the historic Albaicín quarter, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1984. It is considered one of the most charming corners of the entire city. And it is also the neighbourhood with the most history in Granada. That is where the current city of Granada originated. Walking through its winding, cobbled streets is the best way to get to know its typical urban layout and to discover the traditional Carmens, secluded villas with lush hidden gardens that define this Hispano-Muslim neighbourhood. To conclude your day, witness a legendary sunset from the San Nicolás Viewpoint, offering the most spectacular panoramic views of the Alhambra against the backdrop of the Sierra Nevada. Finally, embrace a moment of pure serenity with an ancient rite: a visit to the Arab Baths. Relaxing in these thermal waters is the perfect way to soak in the atmosphere of Al-Andalus before returning to your hotel.
Day 5. (Friday) GRANADA – MADRID
Breakfast at the hotel. We depart for the heart of Spain. Leaving behind the Granada plains, we enter the province of Jaén, which offers spectacular views of an immense sea of olive groves carpeting the hills as far as the eye can see. The transition from Andalusia to Castilla-La Mancha is dramatically marked as we cross the Despeñaperros Natural Park, an impressive gorge and natural border that breaks through the Sierra Morena mountain range with its steep cliffs and Mediterranean vegetation. Once on the Central Plateau, we will enjoy the vast, golden plains of La Mancha, a land of vineyards, cereal crops, and expansive skies, dotted with picturesque villages and the silhouettes of windmills reminiscent of Don Quixote. In the late afternoon, we arrive in Madrid, marking the end of the trip.
