Description: Andalusia and Highlights of Portugal 11 days from the Costa del Sol
Grand tour of Andalusia and Portugal from the Costa del Sol to visit some of the most fascinating sites on the Iberian Peninsula. We’ll visit Granada and its impressive Alhambra, then continue to Toledo, Madrid, Salamanca, and the Rias Baixas (Lower Estuaries) in Galicia. We’ll then travel through Portugal from north to south, visiting Braga, Porto, Coimbra, the Sanctuary of Fatima, and also Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. We’ll return to Andalusia, passing through Caceres, Seville, and Ronda, before ending our itinerary on the Costa del Sol.

Day 1. (Wednesday) COSTA DEL SOL – GRANADA
Breakfast at the hotel and departure to Granada, with its incredible and amazing monumental environment, the last stronghold of the Moorish Kingdom up to 1492. We’ll visit the world-famous Alhambra complex with its imposing Alcazaba fortress, the Palace of Charles V, and the Generalife Gardens, fountains, gardens, and courtyards that with their sights and sounds have inspired authors such as Washington Irving in his “Tales of the Alhambra“. Free time in the afternoon. We recommend you to visit the Cathedral and the Royal Chapel that houses the tombs of the Catholic Monarchs or stroll through the Albaicín neighborhood and enjoy the beautiful views of the Alhambra from the Mirador de San Nicolás. Dinner and accommodation at the hotel. Optionally you can see a Gipsy Flamenco Show held in a cave-house at Sacromonte Quarter.
Day 2. (Thursday) GRANADA – TOLEDO – MADRID
Breakfast at the hotel. Drive northward where, toward the sky of Castile and surrounded by the Tagus River, it emerges the impressive Imperial City of Toledo – a World Heritage City – where the three cultures Christians, Moorish and Jewish, have lived together in harmony. Resume of the Spanish art, history and spirituality, the whole town of Toledo is a National Monument. We’ll enjoy the lunch in a local restaurant (included) and then we’ll do an in depth city tour of Toledo that includes the most important monuments, its narrow streets and we’ll discover the famous Damasquinado Art (gold and silver inlaying in iron). After the visit we’ll continue to Madrid, the diplomatic capital, economic center, and most populous city in Spain, where the government is based and the Spanish monarchy resides. Arrival at the hotel and overnight stay. We recommend leaving your bags at your hotel and exploring Madrid’s historic center and its must-see sites, such as Puerta de Alcala and Cibeles Square, Puerta del Sol, home to Spain’s Kilometer Zero and the Statue of the Bear and the Strawberry Tree, strolling along Gran Vía and reaching Plaza de España, or Plaza de Oriente, home to the Royal Palace and Almudena Cathedral. For dinner, we recommend heading to Plaza Mayor, where you’ll find a wide variety of taverns and restaurants.
Day 3. (Friday) MADRID – SALAMANCA – VIGO
Breakfast and departure heading northwest to Salamanca, the university city par excellence. Free time to explore this city at your leisure, a World Heritage Site of great artistic wealth. A stroll through the pedestrian streets of the historic center will take you to the Plaza Mayor, one of the most beautiful squares in Spain. You can visit Salamanca’s two cathedrals (the old cathedral, dating from the 12th and 13th centuries in Romanesque style, and the new one from the 16th century), the Casa de las Conchas, the Baroque-style Clerecía church, and the University with its beautiful Plateresque façade. We continue our route to reach Galicia, a mythical land steeped in history and unique natural and scenic beauty. Arrival in Vigo, located in the middle of the estuary from which it gives its name, the southernmost of the Rías Baixas and undoubtedly the most beautiful, with attractive beaches. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Day 4. (Saturday) VIGO – VIANA DO CASTELO – BRAGA – PORTO
Breakfast. Crossing the border into Portugal, we will arrive at Viana do Castelo, a town located between the mouth of the Minho River and Porto. Free time to visit the old town with its cobbled streets and emblazoned buildings. We will continue to Braga, known as the city of the archbishops and the third most populated city in Portugal. Free time to discover the essence of Braga at your own pace, with its narrow, labyrinthine streets hiding places of historical interest, original monuments, and traditional family businesses. You can visit the medieval Braga Cathedral, which houses the Museum of Sacred Art and the Gothic-style Chapel of the Kings, the imposing Archbishop’s Palace, and the beautiful Santa Bárbara Garden. Don’t leave Braga without trying its exquisite cuisine. Among its typical dishes, you can find cod prepared in the Braga style, roast lamb, and Abade de Priscos pudding. In the afternoon, departure for Porto, a city declared a World Heritage Site. Arrival at the hotel and accommodation.
Day 5. (Sunday) PORTO
Breakfast at the hotel. We have a full day to enjoy this authentic city, capital of Northern Portugal. We begin with a panoramic tour of Porto to discover the Sé Cathedral, Porto’s most important religious monument, a blend of styles and influences, as well as the Stock Exchange Palace, one of Porto’s most beautiful buildings, and the Church of Santa Clara. We end at a local winery where we will taste its world-famous porto wine. The rest of the day is at your disposal to discover the atmosphere full of history and nostalgia of this port city located on the Ribera del Duero, at its mouth in the Atlantic Ocean, with its elegant neighborhoods and stately villas in counterpoint to the narrow streets and old alleys. You can stroll along Avenida dos Aliados, the Ribeira de Porto on the banks of the Douro River, and admire the Dom Luis I Bridge, Porto’s most famous bridge. Climb the Clérigos Tower, the best viewpoint in Porto, from where you will have fabulous panoramic views of the historic city center. Hotel accommodation.
Day 6. (Monday) OPORTO – COIMBRA
Breakfast at the hotel. We leave Porto heading south to reach Coimbra, a riverside city rising from the Mondego River and the former capital of Portugal during the Middle Ages. Arrival and lunch included in a local restaurant. You will then enjoy free time at your disposal to explore the well-preserved medieval Old Town with its dark cobbled streets, visit Coimbra’s monuments: the monumental 12th-century Romanesque cathedral Sé Velha, the historic University of Coimbra, the oldest and most prestigious university in Portugal, the Gothic Igreja de Santa Cruz, Coimbra’s most historically important church, or enjoy coffee and pastries at Café Santa Cruz. Arrival at the hotel and overnight stay.
Day 7. (Tuesday) COIMBRA – FÁTIMA – LISBON
After breakfast at the hotel, we continue our route south to Fátima. We will discover this important sacred center of the Christian faith, known worldwide for its Sanctuary, a place of Christian pilgrimage since the beginning of the 20th century. Free time at your disposal to visit the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima: the impressive Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, the Chapel of the Apparitions, the heart of the sanctuary and the place where, according to the Catholic Church, three visionary children Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta Marto received various apparitions and heavenly messages from the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God. You will be able to visit the tombs of the three little shepherds, the precious statue of Our Lady of Fátima, the great oak tree, and also the monument dedicated to the three little shepherds of Fátima. At the end of the day, we will continue to Lisbon, the capital and largest city of Portugal. Arrival and overnight at the hotel. In the evening, you can optionally enjoy a fado show (typical Portuguese folklore).
Day 8. (Wednesday) LISBON
Breakfast at the hotel. We enjoy a full day to explore every corner of Lisbon. We will start the day with a guided tour of Lisbon. Through Lisbon’s traditional neighborhoods, we will reach the Belem district, on the north bank of the Tagus River estuary, the birthplace of many great Portuguese navigators who set sail across the oceans in the 15th century to explore and trade with India and the Orient. We will see the Monument of the Discoveries (Padrão dos Descobrimentos), a monument celebrating the Portuguese Age of Discovery, we will see the Belem Tower, a medieval defensive fortification and an outstanding example of the Portuguese Manueline style. Finally, we will see the beautiful Gothic-style Jerónimos Monastery, the resting place of Vasco da Gama, and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with the nearby Belém Tower. You’ll enjoy free time to explore Lisbon at your leisure, discovering the nostalgic corners of the Alfama district, the old town clustered around the castle with its ancient buildings and narrow, winding streets, full of color, home to traditional taverns where fado music resonates with a lost past. Optionally, take a bus excursion to visit Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with Cabo da Roca, and admire Cascais and Estoril. Overnight at the hotel.
Day 9. (Thursday) LISBON – CACERES – SEVILLE
Our last breakfast in Portugal. We depart for Spain, crossing beautiful green plains that stretch as far as the eye can see, dotted with cork and olive trees that stand the test of time. Back in Spain, we enjoy the beautiful landscapes of the Extremadura region, vast areas of holm and cork oaks known as dehesas (pastures), where Iberian pigs roam freely in search of acorns. Arrival in Caceres, a magical medieval city and provincial capital in western Spain. Free time to stroll through the old town with its walls and watchtowers and its famous medieval quarter, a World Heritage Site. We recommend following the narrow paths that will transport you to another century and captivate you with their ancient charm. You will discover the main square of Cáceres: the Plaza Mayor and the Bujaco Tower, known locally as the Clock Tower, the Arco de la Estrella, which is one of the five access gates to Cáceres, the beautiful Palacio de los Golfines … Later, departure by the Autovía de la Plata (Silver Motorway) towards Andalusia, a region with a great heritage of a splendid past, to reach Seville, the capital of Andalusia. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Day 10. (Friday) SEVILLE
After breakfast, we will take a monumental and panoramic tour of Seville. You will visit from the outside the Seville Cathedral, the second largest in the Catholic world after St. Peter’s in Rome and its famous Giralda, the former minaret of the Arab mosque, then stroll through the popular neighborhood of Santa Cruz, the natural setting of Carmen as well as where the myth of Don Juan developed and also Triana, with a deep popular flavor and cradle of bullfighters and artists. Lunch included in a local restaurant. Afterwards, you will enjoy free time to discover different perspectives and specific flavors of this active city full of light. How about a boat trip on the Guadalquivir River to enjoy the panoramic views that exist from the boat? Afterwards, you can walk along the banks of the Guadalquivir River, the great king of Andalusia as the poet Luis de Góngora y Argote called it. Accommodation at the hotel. In the evening, you can optionally enjoy a flamenco show.
Day 11. (Saturday) SEVILLE – RONDA – COSTA DEL SOL
After breakfast, we travel along the White Villages route, listening to stories of outlaws and bandits, to Ronda, one of the most beautiful cities in Andalusia. Free time in the historic center, where we’ll have the chance to see the Puente Nuevo and La Alameda de San Carlos, which offer magnificent panoramic views of the Ronda Mountains and the House of San Juan Bosco. Departure for the Costa del Sol. Arrival at the end of the day, and the end of the tour.
