More information about the Natural Reserve Punta Entinas Sabinar

The Punta Entinas-Sabinar Nature Reserve occupies a strip of one kilometer wide between the coastline and the reliefs of Los Alcores, halfway between the municipalities of Roquetas de Mar and El Ejido. It presents a sub-arid Mediterranean ecosystem in which the combination of coastal and terrestrial resources stands out. It lies in the western side of the province of Almeria, from Entinas Cape to the salt flats of Cerrillos and Salinas Viejas.

Four different environments are combined in the reserve: sandy beaches, dune systems set by Mediterranean scrub, salt flats (Cerrillos and Salinas Viejas) and small ponds, which serve as shelter for a rich community of aquatic birds and are a stopover area for numerous species on their migratory journeys. The outer edge of the beaches is colonized by the marram grass that, in interior areas, is replaced by Mediterranean scrub, such as mastic, black juniper, black hawthorn and agaves. On the other hand, the salt flats have a belt of vegetation, with reed and ryegrass. On its seabed you can find interesting meadows of Posidonia oceanica seagrass (commonly known as Neptune grass or Mediterranean tapeweed), the westernmost colony in the Mediterranean.

The diversity of biotypes favors the presence and abundance of vertebrates. In addition to the pink flamingo, the variety and number of waders that use this area as a resting place on their migratory route stand out, highlighting the great kont, the dunlin, the little stint, the sanderling, the redshank and sandpipers. Among the seagulls, the Audouin and dwarf seagull also stand out.
