More information about Seron, Macael and Sierra de los Filabres Mountains

Travel through the Sierra de los Filabres Mountains. We will visit the typical town of Seron, producer of the best hams in Almeria. We will understand the production process of the ham, we’ll visit some marble quarries and also artisan workshops. During the trip we will be able to observe the wonderful forests of the area.

Seron is one of the villages in Almeria with an own personality, a rich prehistory and a rich history, rural, healthy air and the good art of drying its most emblematic product: hamSeron has everything what is needed for a good touristic offer: a beautiful countryside, especially in the area of Las Menas, on the northern route towards El Calar; a beautiful white village, crowned with an impressive castle what looks over the valley of Almanzora, between farmlands and green; an excellent gastronomy with is characterized, of course, by the ham.

It is essential to get to know Seron, the Seron of Las Menas and its history and countryside; the village itseld, the castle which still treasures rests of the original fortress from the time of the Arabs, the little sympethatic church Virgen de los Remedios, its well restaured square and the parish church that dates from the 16th century. A whole town full with natural beauty and with remnants of a very rich history.

The marble of the Sierra de los Filabres, known as the marble of Macael, is present in the whole history just as it is present nowadays all over the world. The marble of Macael was used by the Phoenicians and in large blocks it has contributed to the Roman civilization and the civilization of Al Andalus. Furthermore it has contributed to our history, before and after the Moorish Revolt and the repopulation of the village, at important works like the Royal Chapel of the Ctholic Kings in Granada (1521) and the Monastery of El Escorial (1581), the Cathedral of jaen (1655) andthe Royal Palace of Madrid (1792).

In the center of this production lies the village of Macael which has given its name to the marble of Los Filabres. A village clearly in expansion, surrounded by quarries and workshops, the continuous traffic of lorries, elevated on a hill and whose streets and squares together with the ballustrades are a monument to the marble. With a beautiful green view over the river Laroya on one side of the village, in Macael one has to look foor the beauty in the prosperity that eradiates from this village, the good construction of a village in a continuous expansion and constant renovation, an atmosphere that speaks for itself, looking into the future with confidence.

The Spanish German Astronomical Observatory Calar Alto, situated under the priviliged sky of he Sierra de los Filabres, on a hight of 2168 meters above sealevel, is the most important Observatory on the European continent. It is used by the Max-Planck Institute for Astronomy in HeidelbergGermany, and the Institute for Astrophysics of Andalusia (CSIC) in Granada, Spain. The observatory enjoys the privilige of the climate in Almeria, dry and cloudless skies, what makes it possible to perform more then 200 nights of observations per year. The position of the observatory is ideal for nightly observations because of the complete obscurity and the quality of the sky. This is why this place was chosen after having studied rigorously other places all ver the world to be the seat of the observatory.

This astronomic center has a history of more then 30 years and has contributed in a decisive way to the evolution of astronomy in Spain. Amongst the complex installations are 3 reflector telescopes of different diameters, equipped with cameras and detectors of the last generation. All these instruments are at the disposal of the spanish and german astronomic society for all kinds of astronomic studies, from closeby objects in our solar system to the most remote systems.
