More information about Almeria and its province

Sierra de Gador … the great unknown… The Sierra de Gador forms a small subsystem in the southwest of the province of Almería and is situated between the Sierra Nevada, the Campo de Dalias, the vally of the river Andarax and the river Adra. This mountainrange forms a topographic barrier of a considerable height and offers a diversity of countrysides: from sealevel upto heights of more then 2.000 meters. The highest top called Morron de la Launilla, is situated at 2.249 meters. Due to the inaccessibility of some of the areas, this is a region which preserves its naturalness to a very high level. This is the reason why several oak and pine forrests have stayed untouched, which allows us to imagine how this whole region used to be.

The Poniente de Almeria lays at the foot of the Sierra de Gador, traditionally called the Campo de Dalias. It used to be a wilderness with hardly any agriculture, but thanks to the discovery of horticulture under plastic this area has changed a lot lately and has grown into one of the areas in Spain with the highest average income per head of the population. This horticulture is the most important source of income for the province.

The Alpujarra of Almeria is a complete contrast compared with the Alpujarra of Granada. The countryside here in Almeria is astonishing, different, dryer, but at the same time with many fertile areas, green, thanks to the water of the River Andarax. In the Alpujarra of Almeria one can still see little villages of pure arabic origin, situated on the many slopes, with small and steep streets.

Alhabia is situated at the confluence of two rivers, the Andarax and the Nacimiento, a privileged position in a region of clayish soil, what defines this hamlet of moorish origin. Since its beginning there is a marked place for cattle trade and a pottery, which have attracted merchants from the whole area. The pottery in Alhabia is traditional, tipically spanish, where the profession has passed from father to son, generation after generation. A handmade ceramic, in a typical andalusian, mediterranean style.

The beautiful little city of Laujar de Andarax, capital of the Alpujarra of Almeria, is situated in the valley formed by Sierra Nevada and Sierra de Gador and lies at 921 meters above sealevel. Bodegas Valle de Laujar was established in the year 1991. Their buildings are situated in the middle of the heart of the vineyards (about 600 hectares), which dispose of modern installations and a production capacity of around 1,500.000 million liters. A wine of the high mountains is being produced, with the denomination ‘Vinos de la Tierra Laujar-Alpujarra’, wine area Lauja-Alpujarra.

Berja lies at the foot of the Sierra de Gador, at 14 km of the Mediterranean Coast, and at 8 km of the neighboring village of Dalias. Remarkable is the presence of numerous springs which have been the origin of different districts and centers. The erudite Manuel Gomez Moreno has emphasized this fact: there  where there was water and the earth was suitable, that is where humans settled. As from the arabic poets upto the romantic travellers of the 19th century, the water in Berja has always been mentioned.

Dalias, of an ancient history, where iberians, romans, arabs and christians left a cultural heritage of which many architectural remains have been left behind. The church of Santa Maria de Ambrox was built between the 19th and the 20th century, although the foundation took place in the year 1501. This temple was destroyed during the Revolt of the Moors in the Alpujarra. Once t was reconstructed, the church was again destroyed by the earthquake of august 25th, 1804. The main chapel has a woodcut of the Santo Cristo de la Luz, an artwork of the sevillian artist A. Castillo Lastrucci in 1939. The festivities of Dalias in honor of the Santisimo Cristo de la Luz were declared Festivities of National Touristic Importance. The festivities are unique because of their religious dedication, the emotion and because of the fireworks, as during the prosession of the figure of Christ, thousands of artificial rockets (fireworks) are lightened. The most impressive moment is the return of figure of Christ to the church.
