Awesome excursion to visit the most beautiful places of the Costa de Almeria. We’ll travel along the Natural Park of Cabo de Gata to enjoy the magnificent views offered by the Lighthouse of Cabo de Gata and the Mermaids Reef, we pass near the salt lakes of Cabo de Gata where the pink flamingos nest and then discover the village of Mojacar, of Moorish origin, now one of the main tourist destinations in Almeria and Andalusia. The “Cabo de Gata”, one of the milestones of the Mediterranean Coast in the south-eastern part of the Iberian Peninsula, the extreme part of a volcanic mountain range that makes the eastern border between the lowlands of Almeria and the Land of Nijar. The contact with the sea is characterized through the presence of beautiful cliffs, alternated with little beaches which were used by seamen as shelter. Pirates used them to hide themselves and to ambush. For centuries pirates were active in this area and as a result of this hardly any steady population settled here. This led to a very good preservation of this whole area. The largest variety of birds is concentrated in summertime, but any season is suitable for watching different birds such as avocets, stilts, herons, seagulls, ducks and above all flamingos.

Cabo de Gata is a unique natural area, unique in Europe, with contrasting country sides and a game of light that impresses anyone who visits this Park. With one of the most beautiful coastlines of the eastern Mediterranean Sea, full of ecological richness, the Natural Park of Cabo de Gata has developed itself into one of the natural jewels of Almeria, Andalusia and of the whole of Spain.

Carboneras lies at the foot of the mountains Sierra Cabrera, directly at the sea, with a beach of 14 kilometres long. At the same time, it is the eastern entrance to the Natural Park Cabo de Gata – Nijar and 78% of its territory lies inside this Natural Park. It still keeps the charms of a typical fishermen village and nearby we can see the rough and arid landscapes as well as the green riverbeds and regions where there used to be agriculture. Carboneras is famous for its Beach of the Dead and the Festivities of Moors and Christians. Nearby we can find the largest desalination installation of Europe.

Mojacar is one of the most charming villages on the east coast of Almeria. The popular architecture of white houses, the beaches and the environment are the best publicity for this little village. Mojacar lies on a hill at the foothills of Sierra Cabrera. The village centre is of Arabian origin and still keeps its peculiar structure of terraces, small streets and typical corners. At the foot of the village lies a strip of more than 5 kilometres of beautiful beaches.

The Moorish Fountain with twelve springs, at the foot of the village, the fortress-church of Santa Maria, built as from the middle of the 16th century onwards, the water-reservoir of the old Nasrid Castle, the Gate of Luciana and the Gate of the City (which leads to one of the most beautiful corners of the village) are worthwhile to be visited. It is difficult to indicate where to look, as in Mojacar you will find one beautiful corner after the other. There is no other advice then to wander through the little streets, where you will always find something to admire.
