Information about destination:

Jerez is an attractive city, situated in a fertile area between the sea and the mountains. It has some important world-famous tourist attractions which make it one of the most representative cities of Andalusia, namely: horses, wine, brandy, Sherry and of course Flamenco! These are inextricably linked with Andalusia and Spain and are defining features of this city.

Jerez with its tradition and legacies has a lot to offer, including (but not limited to): incredible horse shows, visits to its incomparable wineries, cathedrals where wine and brandy are born (where they silently mature and age), the most pure Flamenco, an old town declared a Monumental Art-Historic Complex (where churches, palaces and unique buildings can be seen through the orange trees), fountains on squares, streets, corners and many museums and information centres where the Bull, Horse, Flamenco and Wine take centre-stage.

From time immemorial the horse has been central to the identity of Jerez. In the 15th century the monks of La Cartuja carefully selected and bred their horses over a long period of time to create the famous Carthusian horses, reaching the pinnacle of their breeding. The Carthusian is extremely elegant and is considered by many breeders to be the purest strain of Andalusian (pure Spanish horse). Today we can enjoy watching these noble animals with their riders in the beautiful horse shows which take place regularly in the City.

The world-famous Sherry is a result of the exceptional geographic situation, proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, the ‘tierras albarizas’ (chalky soil where the grapevines grow) and the variety of white grape known as ‘Palomino’. The expertise of the wineries and the cathedrals where the wines mature in quietude patiently waiting to be consumed, make this unique Sherry possible.

The preparation of the different wines is regulated and controlled by the ‘Consejo Regulador de la Denominación de Origen Jerez – Xerès – Sherry’ (The Regulatory Board of Denomination of Origin Jerez – Xeres – Sherry), this also covers the ‘Vinegar of Jerez’, the traditional ‘solera’-system (process for ageing by fractional blending with a set of barrels or containers) and the obtaining of young wines. The ‘Bodegas of Jerez’ are developed as spacious buildings with high gable roofs, which in the dim light guarantee a constant degree of humidity and temperature, essential for the preparation of the wine.
