Information about destination:

‘The Thousand Kashbahs’ is the name of a route that runs through the south of the High Atlas Mountains along a series of fortresses. Sometimes they are real fortress-villages, made of adobe with towers and battlements and decorated with bricks. They are situated in a spectacular landscape of deserts and mountains in various shades of red and ochre. Rivers create ravines that transform into fertile valleys or into an oasis with green palm trees.

The old Kasbashs possess a seductive attraction. The powerful contrasts of the landscape are thrilling and the light and tranquillity fill one’s soul with a sense of peace and calm. You can understand why this is one of the most popular and most attractive routes in the whole Morocco.

Erfoud is a city built in one of the most vital oases of Morocco. Nearby is Rissani, with important historic monuments and the ruins of Sijilmassa, a legendary medieval city that controlled the main route through the Sahara.

The Dunes of Merzouga have dimensions of about 22 km from north to south and about 5 km from east to west at the widest point. The highest dunes are in the north, with a height of 884 meters. In the middle of the dunes there are several small oases where water appears if one digs a little. They are the most beautiful dunes of Morocco, especially as they change their colour, from orange to gold and then to red. The film ‘The Mummy’ was made here.

Tinerhir is an important city situated between the Tafilalet and the Draa. Built on terraces and crowned by the old Kashbah of Glaoui, it is surrounded by a hill in the important oasis of Todgha where there’s also a palm tree forest, olive trees, orange trees and other fruit trees. The privileged situation, the area’s beauty and excellent hotel facilities make it an important reference point for travelling through the region. To the north in the direction of Er Rachidia, is the Precipice of Todgha.

Ouarzazate (sometimes referred to as the door of the desert) is the departure point for excursions through the Valleys of the Draa, the Dades and the Sous and to Zagora, Erfoud and Tineghir. Ouarzazate is also an important centre for tourists and artisans. Amongst the places of interest are the Kashbah of Taourirt (which was in ancient times the residence of the Pasha of Marrakech) and the artisan centre where you can find carpets and workshops where objects of stone and ceramics are made and sold.

The Valley of the Draa is almost 200 km long and although it’s a classic tourist destination in Morocco it’s still completely authentic. Palm trees and horticultural areas are interrupted by the presence of kasbahs and ksour made of adobe. Hidden within walled villages which have retained their original architecture, we find terraced roofs and balustrades decorated with arches.

The city of Zagora is called ‘The Gate of the Desert’ and it’s a mandatory stage of one’s journey in order to travel into the far south. At the end of the main street (where the majority of the shops are located) you’ll see the famous sign, ‘to Timbuktu 52 days by camel’.
